Ouzoud – Highest Waterfalls in Morocco

Ouzoud Waterfalls (Cascade d‘Ouzoud) are the highest waterfalls in Morocco. In spring, they are very rich in water, making it the most beautiful time to visit them.

The waterfall is situated near the village Ouzoud and in the province of Azilal. Nearest big cities are Beni Mellal, 75 kilometers away, and Marrakesh, 150 kilometers away. The name Ouzoud originates from the Amazigh language, meaning “Olive.”

The waterfalls stand 110 meters high and span across several levels. At the base of the waterfall lies a small lake. Boats operate on this lake, ferrying people from one point to another. Located in the mountain walls are several restaurants, some of which are only accessible by going down to the lake and taking a boat to the other side.

Little Souk on the Way Down to the Waterfall

On the opposite side, where there is direct access in front of the waterfalls, there are pathways with and without stairs. These pathways lead to a small souk where vendors sell various items, including souvenirs and regional products like honey, oil, and herbs. At the end of the souk, one will reach the waterfalls.

Monkeys in Ouzoud

Another highlight is the presence of freely living monkeys along the pathway to the waterfalls. Known as “Berber monkeys” or “Macaca,” these monkeys are native in Northafrica with Morocco being their primary habitat. Unfortunately, they are considered an endangered species, with an estimated population of less than 7000 in Northafrica. Many sellers along the way sell peanuts to feed the monkeys. But caution is advised as the monkeys can be quite demanding for peanuts!
